Topics:

  • LZW compression on FPGA
    The LZW compression algorithm will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2024. The aim of this work will be to learn about it or a similar algorithm and implement it on a gate array and analyze the result. The task can be developed in high-level synthesis tools.
    Requirements: Either good knowledge of C/C++ (C++ is an advantage not necessary) or good knowledge of VHDL.
  • Benchmark of selected algorithms on acceleration cards
    The aim of this work is to create benchmark computational tasks for AMD VCK5000 and AMD Alveo U50LV accelerator cards, investigating data throughput and computational performance on typical tasks such as matrix multiplication, FT computation or neural network inference. The benchmark will be compared to the same (or at least similar) tasks solved on GPUs and CPUs.
    Requirements: good C++ knowledge, experience in Linux bash
  • Time-to-digital ADC for FPGA circuits
    A time-to-digital ADC is based on accurate measurement of the time of some known event, typically of charging of a capacitor. The goal of this work will be to create and compare several types of digital AD converter parts. In particular, the student will focus on different methods of measuring time in FPGAs - using different counter designs, codes or delay elements.
    Requirements: good knowledge of VHDL, basic knowledge of FPGA circuits, AD conversion principles and basics of microelectronics.
  • Platform for synchronized remote audio signal collection
    The acquisition of audio signals using MEMS microphones is limited by the length of the data wires. The microphones can be operated on a printed circuit board or at a very short distance from the receiver. Using differential wiring, the range could be extended using standard cabling and connectors (UTP). The objective of this work is to identify suitable LVDS circuits, design circuit boards for the microphone side and the receiver side, fabricate the boards, assemble them and verify the operation. DragonFly 3D PCB printer will be used to print PCBs. One of the task will be to familiarize with differences between design and manufacturing process of traditional and 3D printed PCBs.
    Requirements: Printed Circuit Board design basics, Electronics measurements (oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.)

Topics: Discretization of Filters in IEC Flickermeter

Annotation: IEC Flickermeter is an algorithm widely used for the estimation of severity of voltage fluctuations in power grids with special focus on the flickering of lighting systems. It consists of several specially designed filters. The filters in the IEC standard are prescribed in continuous domain, which is suitable for observing the dynamics of the filters, but unsuitable for implementation. While direct discretization of the filters for single purpose use in one implementation of the algorithm is usually not an issue, aim of this job is to compare and verify multiple discretization approaches for each of the filters on a wide range of sampling step sizes both in single and double precision, and develop a general discretization guide.
