Dissertation defence

A dissertation defence can be requested only after successfully passing the State Doctoral Examination and after completing the dissertation work (DiSP). Defence of the dissertation in the doctoral study programme is governed by Act 111/1998 Coll. and the relevant provisions of the Study and Examination Regulations of the Technical University of Liberec (SER).

Instructions for preparing the dissertation defence

  • The student will complete the “Request for dissertation defence” form and submit it to the Study Department for Doctoral Studies (SD).
  • At the same time, the supervisor may submit a proposal for the expert reviewer, or a proposal for the composition of the commission in accordance with the SER.
  • The student will bring three copies of the DiSP in the required form to the Study
  • Department for Doctoral Studies. Examples of the folders and the title pages of the final work are governed by the valid Rector’s Directive 5/2018 (Publication of Bachelor’s, diploma, dissertation and rigorous works and their basic unified layout) and the wording of the Methodology for the elaboration of Bachelor’s and diploma theses.
  • The student will bring 10 copies of a “Summary of the Dissertation (example)”. The summary shall contain:
    • max. 24 pages
    • main conclusions of the DisP
    • full references of the DisP
    • a separate list of the author’s publication results indicating the proportion attributed to them in the event that there is more than one author
  • The supervisor will assess the outcome of the plagiarism check in STAG.
  • The supervisor will prepare their opinion on the dissertation by either recommending or not recommending the defence of the dissertation, which the student will submit to the SD together with the “Request for dissertation defence” form. In their opinion, they will also comment on the outcome of the plagiarism check.

Opening the dissertation defence

  • After checking that the formal requirements are met, the SD will publish the necessary documents on the FM website, inform the Chairperson of the Departmental Board (DB) about the request for the opening of the DisP defence and transfer all the data in the required format to the DB.
  • The SD will check the inclusion of the dissertation to STAG and add the date of submission.
  • The DB will discuss the submitted documents and proposals and, in if it agrees it will propose (through the SD) the composition of the Committee for the DisP defence to the Dean and the expert reviewers of the dissertation.
  • If the Dean agrees with the composition of the committee, the SD will discuss the proposal with the proposed members, and the Dean will appoint the committee and the expert reviewers.
  • The agreed date of the defence will be published on the FM website in accordance with the SER.

Expert reviewer’s assessment

The expert reviewer will express their opinion in their assessment on the following points.

  • A summary of the results of the work (including comments on the publication of the results or their acceptance for publication)
  • The originality of the solution
  • The structure of the dissertation
  • Comments on the text
  • Language and graphical level
  • Questions for defence
  • Conclusions in the prescribed form:
    • In his/her dissertation, the author demonstrated/failed to demonstrate the ability to perform independent creative work in the given field.
    • The work meets/does not meet the requirements of a dissertation in the given field.
  • Date and signature of the expert reviewer (may also be electronic)
     

Usual course of the dissertation defence

  • The supervisor introduces the student, his/her work and his/her main results
  • Presentation, about 20-30 minutes long
  • Familiarization with the expert reviewers’ assessments, answering questions
  • Discussion of the DisP
  • Private discussion of the committee and vote
  • Public announcement of the results
  • The course of defence is recorded in a protocol, as well as the result of the vote, and the protocol is sent to the Dean of FM
