State Doctoral Examination (SDE)

Students are obliged to submit an application for the state doctoral examination (SDE) within three years of commencement of their studies (see the Dean’s directive). The application for SDE is submitted by the student to the study department for doctoral studies (SD) after completing all of the examinations according to the Individual Study Plan. The application form, including the supervisor’s opinion on the prescribed form, and all other formalities, shall usually be submitted 30 days before the scheduled date. The state doctoral examination in the doctoral study programme is governed by the relevant provisions of Act 111/98 Coll. and the Study and Examination Regulations of the Technical University of Liberec.

Instructions for preparation for the State Doctoral Examination

• The student will complete the “SDE Application Form”, pass it to the supervisor to add his/her opinion and will then submit it to the SD.
• At the same time, the student will submit eight copies of their “Doctoral Thesis” according to the relevant model in the printed form + CV (according to the Art. 19 of the SAR) and will also send it in the electronic form to the SD.
• The application form and the thesis are submitted to the relevant DB and are published on the website in the documents for discussion of the DB. The final proposal of the committee with the opinion of the DB will be forwarded by the SD to the Dean for approval.
• After the completing the “SDE Application Form”, appointment of the committee, announcement of the date and location of the examination, the student and the supervisor are informed through the SD and the date of the SDE is published on the website.

Recommended structure of the thesis

• Introduction
• Summary and evaluation of the hitherto knowledge in the field of the theme of the dissertation
• Definition of the objectives of the dissertation based on the analysis of the current state
• Overview of achieved results in the field of the theme
• Outline of ideas for the further direction of the dissertation
• Conclusion
• List of used literature
• Introduction of publications of the dissertation related to the theme
• Structured CV (not including personal details)

Usual course of the SDE

• Introduction of the doctoral student by the supervisor (3 min)
• Presentation of the thesis (20 min)
• Discussion of the committee on the presented theme (questions are recorded on discussion sheets and sheets for the verification of knowledge)
• Testing of individual subjects by the members of the commission (test report, including whether the student passed or failed is archived in the student’s file and summarized in the minutes)
• Private discussion and a secret ballot. The Chairperson of the committee will select two scrutineers - members of the committee who will collect and count the voices. The number of voters and individual votes are shown in the minutes. The scrutineers will seal the ballot papers in an envelope and both will sign over the edge of the seal.
• The overall evaluation of the SDE (pass/fail) is recorded in minutes of the course of the SDE including any recommendations for the student’s further work on the theme of the dissertation.
• After the vote the student is made acquainted with the result.
• The minutes and the sheets are archived in the student’s file and the SD enters the passing of the examination into IS STAG
